ABSTRACT

Cognitive impairment is a common dysfunction after central nervous system disease or injury, which seriously affects the daily life of patients and brings heavy economic burdens to the family and society. Neurofeedback training (NFT) based on electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive method of neuroregulation, which can improve cognitive function and behavior by autonomously adjusting brain function through feedback. This paper reviews the application of EEG signal-based neurofeedback training in cognitive rehabilitation, and discusses the current problems and future development trends in this field, so as to provide new ideas for clinical research and treatment of cognitive disorders.

ABSTRACT

Few reports have yet investigated adequate cognitive rehabilitation for patients with chronic cognitive disorder. In this report, we describe a case of cognitive rehabilitation 10 months after onset of cerebral infarction in the right middle cerebral artery region, resulting in a good outcome. The patient was a 44-year-old right-handed male, with primary symptoms of inattention and left hemispatial neglect. The patient had not undergone any neuropsychological evaluations or cognitive rehabilitation until 10 months after disease onset. After 30 days of both direct attention training and metacognitive strategy training, including time pressure management, improvement of his cognitive disorder was achieved. The teaching of internal methods to improve metacognition with a high level of evidence was effective even 10 months after onset. Furthermore, it is important for therapists who provide cognitive rehabilitation using metacognitive strategy training to understand patients' remaining functions based on neuropsychological assessment, and to consider and teach compensatory methods so that they can be effectively used by patients in situations of daily life.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Music-based interventions are promising for cognitive rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease; however, systematic reviews covering the topic are scarce. Objective To analyze the effectiveness of music-based interventions for cognitive rehabilitation in PD. Method Systematic review study based on PRISMA criteria. The descriptors Parkinson's disease, Parkinson's disease, idiopathic Parkinson's disease, music-based interventions, music therapy, music training, auditory stimulation, music, rhythm, rhythmic, cognition, and cognitive were used. Five databases were searched PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane in May 2022. Only randomized controlled trials with no limit on publication date or language were included. Risk of bias was assessed following Cochrane Collaboration criteria for development of systematic intervention reviews. Results Nine hundred nineteen articles were found by the descriptors; 266 were excluded for being repeated; 650 for not meeting the inclusion criteria. The remaining three articles were included and analyzed. The interventions consisted of practices with emphasis on rhythm and were conducted in groups. Risks of important biases were observed, such as lack of blinding in the allocation of participants and in the assessment of outcomes, as well as incomplete data for some outcomes. Conclusion Overall, the results showed no evidence of efficacy of music-based interventions for cognitive outcomes in PD.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The use of computational systems has ventured into different healthcare areas, such as rehabilitation and stimulation of cognitive processes. To this date, it is possible to identify some reviews collecting studies on the efficacy and effects of those programs in groups such as older adults, children, and teenagers; there is a lack of academic literature giving an account of young and middle-aged adults. Objective: To identify empirical studies that measured the feasibility and effect of computer-based stimulation and rehabilitation programs for cognitive functions in young and middle-aged adults. Materials and methods: The PRISMA ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) extension was used as a base for a scoping review, as suggested by Cochrane Collaboration. Five databases -Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, PubMed, and Taylor & Francis- were used to trace information. The data registry and synthesis of the results was carried out independently by two reviewers. Results: 896 registries were found between 2015 and 2022, of which 91 met the eligibility principles, which evaluated the effects of programs based on computational systems on executive functions on young and middle-aged adults. Conclusion: Most of the interventions based on computational systems showed to be feasible and had moderate to significant effects on executive functions in young and middle-aged adults.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic disease that causes a malformation in red blood cells, making them more fragile and leading to their lysis. Due to their abnormal shape, they predispose to occlusive events in smaller blood vessels, including those in the central nervous system. Literature documents the presence of silent and non-silent cerebral infarctions associated with SCA, along with respective cognitive impairments. In recent years, cognitive impairment and a higher prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been reported in children with SCA who have not experienced ischemic brain events. Method: An experimental and prospective single-case study was conducted, consisting of a rehabilitation program using the CogniFit platform for cognitive training in attention and concentration. Measurements of attention and inhibitory control responses were taken during 45 sessions, using the Cognitive Assessment Battery for Attention (CAB-AT). Results: It was observed that the intervention had a significant impact on the attention component, which remained above the baseline even after discontinuing the intervention. However, no significant impact was found on inhibitory control. Conclusion: Although the intervention improved attention, it did not have the same effect on inhibitory control. Complementing rehabilitation with pharmacological management and designing new studies involving heterogeneous populations are recommended.

ABSTRACT

With rapid global growth of the older population, it has been increasingly important for screening, early diagnosis, treatment and daily monitoring of cognitive function in the elderly population. Given the limited effects of pharmacological treatments, cognitive rehabilitation has the potential to improve meaningful outcomes for older people and thus comes into sight. Traditional cognitive assessment and rehabilitation require face-to-face interview, while patients with cognitive impairment are mostly elderly with difficulties in access to medical care, usually needed to be accompanied by caregivers and having other co-morbidities with limited mobility. This contradiction is especially prominent in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, which may even exacerbate cognitive decline of patients. Therefore, remote cognitive assessment and rehabilitation based on information and communication technologies have become new options. This paper introduces the widely used and validated means of remote assessment and its guiding use in cognitive rehabilitation, which can be implemented through the Internet, applications, video and telephone. The advantages of being fast, convenient and geographically agnostic lead to a wider use in large community and safeguard the health of patients with cognitive impairment.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Temporal lobe epilepsy usually produces mnestic, attentional, and language deficits. In most cases, it is treated with antiepileptic drugs, but one third of them fail, so one therapeutic option is temporal lobectomy, which helps to reduce seizures. However, surgical procedures can have sequelae, including cognitive con-sequences. To counteract these effects, neuropsychological rehabilitation is usually carried out in order to recover, strengthen, and sustain in time skills that were already affected before the surgery. Objective. To provide a reflection on the neuropsychological intervention of tem-poral lobe epilepsy. Method. The reflection on the subject starts from a clinical interest and was sub-sequently expanded from the review of the literature in different databases such as PubMed, Medline, and Scopus between 2000 and 2021. Reflection. There are many therapeutic options at the neuropsychological level and they can contribute positively to the patient's recovery, so professionals need to know the possibilities in order to use the most appropriate strategies according to each case and provide options that benefit the quality of life, taking into account that none is more effective than the other one.Conclusion. As a result, an overview of neuropsychological rehabilitation in pre- and post-surgical patients with lobectomy is presented, with emphasis on traditional neuropsychological rehabilitation and rehabilitation based on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and computation

ABSTRACT

New surgical techniques and advances in intensive care and medical treatment have significantly decreased mortality rates for children and adolescents with complex congenital heart disease (CHD). Survivors are at risk for neurodevelopmental and neuropsychological morbidity caused by both genetic and environmental risk factors, which causes a distinctive pattern of developmental and neuropsychology impairment characterized by mild cognitive impairment, executive functions impaired social interaction, and impairments in core communication skills, including pragmatic language, as well as attention, impulsive behavior, and impaired executive functions among children affected with congenital heart disease. In view of this, the present study reviews the neurodevelopmental and neuropsychological impairment with an objective of insisting the importance in developing and implementing a neuropsychological intervention program for children with congenital heart defect to retrain neuropsychological and neuro-developmental functions. With increased survival rates, the focus of clinical research in the pediatric cardiac population has paralleled the population shift and transitioned from short term surgical survival to the assessment of long- term morbidity

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the effect of cognitive training based on PASS theory on cognition in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Methods:From August, 2018 to June, 2019, 42 patients with PSCI were randomly divided into control group (n = 21) and intervention group (n = 21). The intervention group accepted computer-assisted cognitive training based on the PASS theory, and the control group accepted routine computer-assisted cognitive training, for four weeks. They were assessed with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Lowenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) before and after training. Results:There were 18 patients in each group finishing the trail. After training, the scores of MMSE and LOTCA increased in both groups (t > 8.831, P < 0.001), and increased more in the intervention group than in the control group (t > 2.198, P < 0.05). For the LOTCA factors scores, it increased in orientation, visual perception, spatial perception, motion praxis, visuomotor organization and thinking operations in both groups (t > 2.122, P < 0.05) after training, and increased more in the intervention group than in the control group in visual perception, spatial perception and thinking operations (t > 2.356, P < 0.05), and the differences of visuomotor organization was more in the intervention group than in the control group (t = 2.354, P < 0.05). Conclusion:Cognitive training based on PASS theory can improve cognition for patients with PSCI, especially for visual perception, spatial perception, thinking operations and visuomotor organization.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Despite recent advances in cognitive rehabilitation of patients with cognitive disorders, there are many major obstacles to the optimized global use of this therapeutic resource. Objective: The authors outline the concept of 'therapeutic synergism', i.e. the concurrent use of pharmacological and cognitive rehabilitation therapies to maximize functional benefits, addressing the optimization of therapeutic approaches for cognitive disorders. Methods: Three psychopharmacological and rehabilitation interrelationship paradigms are presented in three different clinical settings. Results: Paradigm 1: Behavioral and cognitive symptoms that hinder a cognitive rehabilitation program, but can be improved with psychopharmacology. Paradigm 2: Cognitive symptoms that hinder cognitive rehabilitation, but can be improved with anticholinesterases. Paradigm 3: Behavioral symptoms that hamper the use of cognitive rehabilitation, but can be improved by psychotropic drugs. Conclusion: Judicious use of psychotropic drugs in cognitive disorders can benefit, directly or indirectly, cognitive functions, thereby favoring other treatment modalities for cognitive impairment, such as neuropsychological rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Cognitive Rehabilitation in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease through a systematic review. Methods The survey of articles was done by MEDLINE (accessed via PubMed), EMBASE and LILACS, following the Cochrane Collaboration and the PRISMA recommendation, using the following eligibility criteria: randomized clinical trials that presented the use of cognitive rehabilitation as non-pharmacological intervention in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, with at least one intervention group and one comparison group. Results Six randomized controlled trials were selected for this review. In all of the studies analyzed, improvement in the performance of patients in the assessment instruments was observed, mainly in relation to the performance of activities of daily living. Conclusion Cognitive rehabilitation is able to prolong the independence of the patient in performing activities of daily living and generate functional and structural changes. As a consequence of the finding of few studies that met the eligibility criteria, we also verified the need for more controlled studies and greater application control, considering the high risk of bias in the studies used.

ABSTRACT

This article aimed to carry out a literary review of the scientific studies published in the last ten years in neuropsychological rehabilitation/ intervention with children and adolescents, seeking to identify how programs with approaches focused on academic and executive difficulties are articulated with family and school demands . The main databases used were PubMed, SciELO and Redalyc. Among the 89 articles found, ten were selected because they included methods for teaching strategies that facilitated school learning and adaptive behaviors. The results of the studies suggest that neuropsychological intervention in children and adolescents promotes the development of cognitive abilities and the processes of language acquisition. However, in view of the distance between the clinical context of intervention and the educational context, more studies need to be promoted in search of a more integrated view on these spaces for promoting development.

ABSTRACT

Compared with age-matched controls, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) populations are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD).There is no consensus that any pharmacological treatment can improve MCI,thus it is plausible to turn attention to cognitive interventions. This paper reviewed the prior researches on cognitive stimulation, cognitive training, and cognitive rehabilitation for MCI based on the categories defined by Clare and Woods in order to clarify the effect of these interventions on improving cognitive function in MCI individuals. The results indicate that cognitive interventions may improve multiple cognitive domains including memory performance, executive functions, processing speed, attention, and social functions in adults with MCI,while the mechanism remains unclear. It suggested that further studies should examine the mechanism of cognitive intervention by applying neuroscience technology and strengthening the control of heterogeneity of the etiologies and symptoms of MCI,and improve the clinical effect by combining cognitive stimulation, cognitive training, and cognitive rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

METHODS: Five children (male=5, age=10.00±0.80) with intellectual impairment participated in this study and were randomly assigned to the experiment that played (received) gaming cognitive rehabilitation system (Neuroworld). The children were applied 2 times a week for 30 minutes during 3 months. The children were assessed K-WSIC-VI (Korean-Wechsler intelligence scale for children-fourth edition) and recorded that gained score in gaming cognitive rehabilitation system before and after intervention. K-WSIC-VI contained five primary index scores: verbal comprehension index, visual spatial index, fluid reasoning index, working memory index, and processing speed index. Gaming cognitive rehabilitation system scoring was composed visual recall, target recall, sequence recall, selective attention, continuous attention, and exploration. RESULTS: In the intelligence quotient (IQ) of K-WSIC-VI, there were significant increased in all children. The visual recall item was highest effective in all children. However, sequential recall showed the lowest improvement in all children. The performance speed of selective attention item was decreased, this means that children's skills have improved. Also, their ability to explore has improved significantly. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, gaming cognitive rehabilitation system was significant effectiveness in cognitive function in some categories for children with intellectual impairment. However, the visual recall and performance speed don't represent of all cognitive function. Therefore, further studies will need to verify by applying more subject and longer duration.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive rehabilitation for depression, cognitive function, ADL, and QOL in patients with post-stroke depression (PSD). In addition, we evaluated the effects of cognitive rehabilitation on customer satisfaction with long-term care facilities and rehabilitation. Methods: This study included 8 participants with PSD who were residents of a long-term care facility located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. In addition to their ordinary rehabilitation (2 sessions per week, 20 minutes per session), participants underwent 36 sessions of cognitive rehabilitation (3 sessions per week, 20 minutes per session, for 12 weeks). Primary outcome measures: Depression severity was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Zung Self Depression Scale (SDS), and the Depression Scale of the Japan Stroke Scale (JSS-D). Frontal lobe function was assessed using the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB). Secondary outcome measures: QOL was assessed using SF-8. Customer Satisfaction with the rehabilitation was measured using the Customer Satisfaction Scale based on Need Satisfaction (CSSNS). Assessments were performed before and after the rehabilitation. Results: The severity scores of depression, frontal lobe function, and customer satisfaction with the rehabilitation all significantly improved after the cognitive rehabilitation sessions. Conclusions: The results obtained in this trial indicate that, for patients with PSD depressive symptoms, frontal lobe function, QOL, and rehabilitation customer satisfaction may be improved by the inclusion of cognitive rehabilitation sessions alongside regular rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

A therapeutic intervention in 30 patients with motor deficit (hemiplegia/hemiparesis), surviving to ischemic ictus, irrigated by the mean cerebral artery with perceptive disorders (sensorial or atentional negligence or anosognosia), assisted in the Rehabilitation Department of Dr Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital, was carried out in Santiago de Cuba, from January to November, 2016, aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the rehabilitative treatment. The sample was divided in 2 groups of 15 members each: those of the control group received conventional treatment; those of the study group, conventional treatment and occupational therapy associated with cognitive rehabilitation. They were considered sociodemographic parameters, of clinical and functional valuation, as well as of global functional recovery. Heminegligence was the most frequent perceptive disorder (63.4 percent) and the study group showed a better functional recovery (93.3 percent) when concluding the treatment, reason why the effectiveness of the conventional rehabilitation integrated to cognitive techniques and occupational therapy was demonstrated
